Oral Communication
Communication is the Key
Communication is a process of sharing and conveying messages or information from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and cultures (McCornack, 2014). There is a wide variety of contexts and situations in which communication can be manifested; it can be a face-to-face interaction, a phone conversation, a group discussion, a meeting or interview, a letter correspondence, a class recitation, and many others.
Everyone communicates with one another. Without communication, there will be no socialization. Communication by nature is a two way process, there must be a sender and a receiver. It can be expressed through written or spoken words, actions, or both spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time. Filipinos are very good in using nonverbal communication also known as gestures. I still remember how my mom's eyes grew bigger when I attempt to do something she doesn't want. During peer group bonding, when you're trying to play a trick on someone, you only look at each other's eyes, raise your eyebrows and you already understand each other.
On the other hand, lack of communication give birth to problems all around the world. A simple misunderstanding may result to war. A war will not be resolved until both parties understand each other. The reason why the message wasn't able to reach the receiver is because of the "noise". In communication, noise blocks the way for the message to reach its receiver. It can be a literal noise around you, it can also be a noise inside you such as anger, pride, insecurities and the likes. We as receiver were able to receive the message but failed to understand due to different "noises". That is also tantamount to unreceived message resulting to misunderstanding.
Our response to the message received relies on the channel the we used. If there is no or minimal presence of noise, then there is a better and clear feed back. But if there is a high presence of noise, there will be poor feedback or no feedback at all if the receiver wasn't able to perceive the message. We all experience miscommunication. We give instructions that wasn't able to be followed because we use the wrong medium of communication. There are things that should be discussed face to face and not through ICT assisted medium. Yes, we are now living in the digital age, but we should know which messages are to be delivered through such kind of medium.
The feedback of the sent message may also be affected by the context, it is the environment where communication takes place. In my recent seminar, I experienced miscontextualization. Since the participants came from different provinces, there are words that are used but have different meaning in respect of their provinces. In Tarlac, for example, they use the word "masanting" to describe beauty, but here in Bulacan, "masanting" is something that is not good looking. Misunderstanding may take place if the receiver wasn't aware of other's context. Different context may also be referred to as barriers. Cultural differences is also a barrier. Our country has different dialects, those dialect serves as barriers for us to understand our co-Filipino's culture. That is the reason why we fail to understand foreigners and vice versa. Filipinos are good communicators. We find it easier to learn a foreign language better than other country, yet we still experience communication barriers.

Based on my experience regarding language barriers, I think it gave me a hard time to reach out other people from Masantol, Pampanga. There are 3 things which mainly affects or hinders us to share the Gospel to those people in Masantol. First is their native language. It is hard for me to converse with them because they are not really used to speak English or Tagalog but somehow I managed to express what we want to share with them. 2nd is their culture, using English words made me awkward sometimes because for them it is an alien language and theyre not really used to hear or speak the said language.. 3rd is their educational background. It is hard for md to share the Gospel sometimes to some people in Masantol because they only knew how to converse with others using their native language.
ReplyDeleteCommunication is indeed a complex process. Most people might just think that it's as simple as an exchange of ideas but I believe that it's more than that. There are a lot of considerations. In communication, it is very important that a person says what he means and means what he says.

ReplyDeleteIndeed, communicatiom plays an important role in our life in many aspects. We all know that in this modernized world, we communicate to express what we are really trying to point out, which are done through verbal communication, written process and even gestures or what they call sign languages, etc. But for me, not all are understandable by each individual especially when we're not used to do it because not all are capable of doing so. Just like the meaning of 'communucation' we find it as - the process of exchanging ideas, talking to someone, etc- but it doesn't end there, it's complex and an unending process. Going back to school days, when we had an activity wherein we're not allowed to talk with each other and we need to make a tower made of papers, all we can do to communicate is through gestures. It's difficult since we used to do oral communications, we need to be careful with our actions to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations. There, we can find the other meaning of communication, which is -whenever we communicate, we should always be careful on what we are saying to avoid misinterpretations that may lead to a gap within a group.- And what's amazing with communicating? It makes us better individuals, in a way that, we learn to listen, express and understand. It teaches us to have an open mind and communication, cooperation and a deeper understanding. That's why , COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY. It's very powerful, it can ruin someone's life, it can inspire and motivate an individual, that depends in the speaker's manner of expression.
